To provide an overview of dealing with substance use within a mental health service
Target Staff Group
All Doctors, Psychologists, Nurses, Social Workers, Healthcare Support Workers and AHPs working in Forensic Mental Health, Adult Mental Health, DNLD and Older Peoples Mental Health Services
Community and In-patient staff working in Specialist Services (excluding Substance Misuse teams, IAPT and Inclusion Services)

  • Attitudes towards substance use and substance users
  • Knowledge of substances: appearance, effects, terminology, classifications
  • Skills: assessment, motivational enhancements, transtheoretical model, coping, relapse, prevention
  • Safety, harm minimisation
  • Dual diagnosis; what it is and why the concern, policy – overview, background and interagency working
  • Links to practice – new ways of working
  • Overview of local services
